According to the Central Pennsylvania Business Journal, an estimated 9.92 million visitors came to Lancaster County in 2023! One of the most popular things bringing tourists to this region is the Amish community. In this blog, you will discover:

Origin of the Amish
People who call themselves Amish are members of a conservative Christian group in North America known as the Old Order Amish Mennonite Church. The Amish originated in 1693–1697 as followers of the Mennonite elder Jakob Ammann in Switzerland, Alsace, and Germany. Migration to North America and assimilation eliminated the Amish in Europe. The Amish settled in Lancaster, Pa., in the 18th century, because of the religious freedom that was granted to them here by Willliam Penn. The Amish are also referred to as the Plain Community.
Where is Amish Country?
Although the Amish have settled in 32 U.S. states, two-thirds are in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Since the first and largest Amish settlement is in Lancaster County, Pa., this region is known as Amish country or Pennsylvania Dutch country.
What to do in Amish Country?
If you want a bird’s eye view of the region, book a Lancaster Balloon Ride! You’ll be able to catch a glimpse of horses and buggies and see Lancaster towns and the city skyline from a brand new vantage point.
Or take a trip back in time by reserving a horse and buggy ride. There are a few places in Lancaster County that offer this adventure, including:
- Abe’s Buggy Rides (Bird in Hand)
- Aaron & Jessica’s Buggy Rides (Bird in Hand)

Another attraction unique to Lancaster County is the Strasburg Railroad. Located in Strasburg, Pa., it’s the oldest continuously operating railroad in North America, and the most visited heritage railroad in the continental United States. Chartered in June 1832, the railroad began serving the community of Strasburg with both freight and passenger service and is the best example of early 20th-century steam railroading. Visitors can purchase tickets to take a 45-minute, fully narrated ride on a steam locomotive through picturesque Amish country farmland.
Best Place to Visit in Amish Country
A trip to Lancaster County is not complete until you visit the Amish Village. This attraction is dedicated to creating authentic encounters with the Amish culture through tours and educational stories about Amish traditions.
The Amish Village consists of a 2-acre property that features buildings that are typical in a Plain Community. This includes a farmhouse, barn, schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop. The Amish Village offers a true representation of how the Pennsylvania Amish have lived for the past 300 years.
While at the Amish Village, visitors can participate in one of three tours: a 25-minute farmhouse tour, 90-minute narrated bus tour, or a self-guided tour of the grounds, schoolhouse, and outbuildings.
Best Places to Shop in Amish Country
Lancaster County is also a wonderful place to shop. Visitors can purchase modern brands and wares at the Rockvale or Tanger outlets, located along Route 30 in Lancaster, or take a step back in time by visiting other marketplaces.
Visitors willing to venture into Lancaster City should stop at Lancaster Central Market, the oldest publicly owned continuously running farmer’s market in America! Established in 1730, this historic market offers produce, meat, poultry, seafood, cheese, flowers, baked goods, home and wellness items, and ready-to-eat food.
Kitchen Kettle Village, located in Intercourse, Pa., features 40 unique shops, restaurants, and lodging.
